More than 14 hours after a major jihadist attack on a prison in eastern Afghanistan, the attackers‘ fighting with security forces continues. At least 20 people, including civilians and security forces, were killed in the attack and 43 others injured, local officials said.

The attackers first detonated a car bomb last night and then stormed the central detention center in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. The terrorist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the attack.

Parts of the detention center were occupied by attackers

Around 700 prisoners who broke out of the prison after the attack were arrested again by special forces. The attackers had parts of the detention center under their control. On Saturday, Afghanistan’s domestic secret service announced the death of high-level IS leader Assadullah Orokzai, who had been killed by special forces in Nangarhar’s provincial capital, Jalalabad.

The Taliban had denied responsibility for the attack shortly after the attack began. They had announced a nationwide three-day fire break for the Islamic Festival of Victims.
