
After the imposition of new US sanctions, Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro has stopped talks with the opposition for the time being.
Maduro said yesterday the trip of a negotiating delegation to the Caribbean island of Barbados, where today and tomorrow talks were planned with opposition representatives. Reason is the „heavy and brutal aggression“ of the US government against Venezuela, it said in a government statement.
Caracas locates „economic terrorism“
US President Donald Trump had the entire assets of the Venezuelan government in the US frozen on Monday. Caracas condemned the procedure as „economic terrorism“.
The US government is one of Maduro’s harshest critics and has backed opposition leader Juan Guaido in the power struggle in Venezuela. Many other countries have already recognized Guaido as a legitimate transitional chief of state, but in Venezuela itself, Maduro remains firmly in the saddle.
After mediation by the Norwegian government, negotiators from both sides had recently met several times in Barbados to seek a way out of the crisis.
