President Emmanuel Macron’s party has lost its absolute majority in the French National Assembly by forming a new parliamentary group. The newly founded Ecologie Democratie Solidarite faction was joined by 17 MPs, including several current and former members of the La Republique en Marche presidential party (LREM, The Republic on the Move).
The new faction describes itself as independent and feels that it belongs neither to the opposition nor to the majority of the government. According to its own statements, it wants to work primarily for „social and ecological change“.
With the reestablishment, the faction of the Presidential Party loses seven members, including some allied MPs in addition to party members. It now has only 288 mandates – the absolute majority is 289 mandates. The LREM can continue to rely on the support of the allied parties Mouvement democrate (MoDem) and Agir.
