French President Emmanuel Macron sees conditions for swift opening of negotiations between the US and Iran and other states. Macron said yesterday evening (local time) in New York after a meeting with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, whom he is trying to move to a meeting with US President Donald Trump.
„I think the conditions for a quick resumption of negotiations have been created,“ said Macron. That could also lead to an „official meeting“ between Trump and Rouhani. The French President met his Iranian counterpart for the second time in 24 hours. Macron also talked to Trump in New York.
Rouhani: Trump has to restore confidence
Rouhani himself told the US broadcaster Fox News yesterday that Trump must restore „confidence“ before a possible two-way meeting. In his speech at the opening of the United Nations General Debate Trump had sharply criticized Iran and certified the country „bloodthirsty“. He threatened Iran with a further tightening of sanctions. At the same time, he also suggested moderate tones: „America is ready to make friends with all those who truly seek peace and respect.“
