German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas landed in Tehran last night, where he wants to fight for the continuation of the nuclear agreement with Iran. Today he wants to meet with his colleague Mohammed Jawad Sarif and President Hassan Ruhani.

One year ago, the United States withdrew from the laboriously negotiated agreement to prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb and is now putting Tehran under pressure again with massive economic sanctions. One month ago, Iran also questioned the agreement and set a deadline of 7 July for the other contractors.

Warning of wildfire

Until then, China, Russia, Germany, France and Britain should guarantee the promised economic benefits for Iran and neutralize US sanctions. But that has not even been nearly achieved.

The tensions between the US and Iran have increased massively in recent weeks. There are fears that it comes to war. Maas has warned of a conflagration in the Middle East in a failure of all rescue attempts for the nuclear deal. In his opinion, that would also have serious consequences for European security.
