London condemns threatening actions by EU opponents

The British government has strongly condemned the threatening actions of right-wing activists against supporters of Britain’s remaining in the EU. In this way, the Brexit debate should not be conducted under any circumstances, said a spokesman for Prime Minister Theresa May in London today.

In particular, he referred to the case of pro-European Conservative MP Anna Soubry, who yesterday was labeled a „Nazi“ by activists during a live TV interview near Parliament. Soubry and two other supporters of EU whereabouts were subsequently harassed by the demonstrators.

Police want to be „robust“ against perpetrators

Previously, a group of 55 MPs had written to Scotland Yard about the incident and denounced a „deteriorating public order and security situation“. Attackers with „radical right-wing and extreme right-wing connections“ used „intimidating and potentially criminal acts“ against MPs, journalists and other public figures, the letter said.

The London police then stated that a suspected illegal activity would be investigated. The police will act in cases of threats and insults „robust“ against the perpetrators.

For her part, Soubry accused the London police of ignoring the increasing abuse of politicians and journalists. In the meantime, demonstrators regularly appeared in front of the parliament building, intimidating people on their way to work. Today, the police presence was increased around the parliament building.
