Due to an increase in coronavirus infections, large parts of the greater Lisbon area have to go back to „lock-down“ for two weeks on July 1st. The Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa announced yesterday. The residents of the 19 affected communities would only be allowed to leave the house to do shopping, go to work or see a doctor.
During this time, only meetings of a maximum of five people will be permitted there. The districts in the center of Lisbon are not affected.
„Only effective form“
„The only effective way to control the pandemic is to keep people at home for as long as possible, always respecting social distance and all protection and hygiene standards,“ Costa told journalists.
The Lisbon region has been the most severely affected part of the country since Wednesday, with almost 18,000 cases of infection, for the first time since the pandemic broke out. So far it had been the north. In total, Portugal has recorded more than 40,000 infections and 1,500 deaths related to Covid-19. The Austrian Foreign Ministry issued a travel warning for Portugal.
