In the first round of the parliamentary elections in Lithuania, the conservative Fatherland Union prevailed against the ruling Union of Farmers and Greens. According to preliminary results, the opposition party received 24.8 percent of the vote in the Baltic EU and NATO country.
The initially leading ruling party from the political center comes to 17.5 percent after counting all electoral districts. This was announced by the electoral commission in Vilnius today. It is followed by the populist Labor Party (9.5 percent) and the Social Democrats (9.3 percent).
Low turnout
Of the remaining 13 political forces who stood in the election in the midst of a period of sharply rising coronavirus infection numbers in Lithuania, two more made it into parliament: the Freedom Party (9.0 percent) and the Liberal Movement (6.8 percent ). The turnout was a low 47.2 percent.
Yesterday’s vote was the first of two rounds of voting: voters initially decided on 70 seats in parliament under proportional representation. In two weeks they will vote on 71 direct mandates in the Seimas parliament. Which coalition will come about is therefore still open.
