According to the army, Libyan soldiers freed 120 refugees who were detained and tortured by human traffickers. The 444th Combat Brigade of the Libyan Army announced yesterday that the people were released after a raid on the traffickers‘ premises in the northern Libyan city of Bani Walid. Most of the people are Egyptians.

The people were exposed to „torture and blackmail,“ the statement said. The Libyan army had already taken action against human traffickers in Bani Walid last week.

The city, 170 kilometers southeast of Tripoli, is considered the center of illegal smuggling activities in Libya. Refugees who want to get to Europe from Libya often find themselves in the clutches of human traffickers in the North African country and are mistreated.
