Representatives of the Libyan parties to the conflict traveled to the Russian capital to negotiate a peace solution for the civil war in northern Africa. This was confirmed by the spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Sakharova, on Facebook today.
The delegations had already arrived and would soon be taking part in the negotiations, she wrote. On the Russian side, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu take part in the talks.
According to a tweet, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Cavusoglu had already arrived in Moscow at night. „In Moscow, as part of our efforts to ensure peace and stability in Libya,“ he wrote of a photo from a nightly reception at the airport. Defense minister Hulusi Akar and chief of intelligence Hakan Fidan were also in Moscow, according to official figures.
According to media reports, the two parties to the conflict are to sign a ceasefire agreement that has already entered into force. The Russian agency TASS reported that this should pave the way for the revival of the political process. The night before yesterday, General Chalifa Haftar had surprisingly agreed to a ceasefire proposed by Turkey and Russia, raising cautious hopes for an end to the months of fighting. Both parties to the conflict immediately accused each other of violations.
