„Le Monde“ apologizes for controversial Macron presentation

The French newspaper „Le Monde“ has apologized for a Nazi-era portrayal of President Emmanuel Macron on the front page of her weekly magazine „M“. „We apologize to those who are shocked,“ editor-in-chief Luc Bronner wrote yesterday evening on the newspaper’s online portal. He rejected the accusations that they did not meet the editorial intentions.

Yesterday’s „M“ front page features a black-and-white illumination of Macron in front of a white and red background reminiscent of the National Socialist flag. The President is half in profile and looks tough and strict. His portrayal involuntarily suggests Hitler’s attitude to propaganda posters of the National Socialists.

The issue came amid the protests of the „yellow vests“ that demonstrated against tax increases and high living costs. The issue is titled: „From Inauguration to the Yellow Vests: The Champs-Elysees, Scene of Macron’s Power.“ Bronner explained that the stylistic elements used for the title page are based on the Russian constructivism of the early 20th century. Followers of Macron, the title had caused violent reactions.
