Latin America has overtaken the United States and Canada in the number of coronavirus deaths and is now second only to Europe. The region officially recorded 144,758 pandemic deaths as of today, and the United States and Canada have registered 144,023 deaths. According to the authorities, the number of Covid-19 patients who died in Europe has so far been 202,505.

Brazil is hardest hit with 72,100 coronavirus deaths – almost half of all victims in Latin America. This is followed by Mexico, which has now overtaken Italy with 35,006 deaths, Peru with 11,870 and Chile with 6,979 deaths.

According to the authorities, a total of 3.37 million people in Latin America contracted the virus. It ranks second among those infected after the United States and Canada with a total of over 3.4 million cases. However, experts believe that both the number of coronavirus deaths and those infected in Latin America is actually significantly higher.
