Resistance to a second Brexit referendum is emerging in the British opposition Labor party. About 60 to 70 MPs are strongly opposed to another referendum on Britain’s exit from the EU, Labor MP Caroline Flint said today.

„Have been forced to“

Labor finance expert John McDonnell emphasized that the party had been urged by the UK’s head of government to support a referendum. „We’ve been forced to do so because Theresa May is delayed and on time,“ McDonnell told Sky News. His party wants to continue its efforts to accept their alternative Brexit plan.

Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn recently backed the call for a second Brexit referendum should Parliament not find enough support for Labor’s alternative plan for Brexit.

Vote on „short and limited“ shift

Britain is scheduled to leave EU membership on 29 March after more than four decades. But there is still no divorce treaty with Brussels, as May has so far found no approval in Parliament for their deal. May wants the lower house to vote no later than mid-March on a „short and limited“ shift of Brexit, if their agreement in Parliament should fail again and the deputies should also reject an unregulated EU exit („no deal“).

According to a media report, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar believes that postponing Brexit until June is „very likely“. Varadkar told his cabinet colleagues in private, the Irish Sunday Independent said, citing an unnamed minister. An opinion from a speaker Varadkar was not available to date.
