A few days before the second anniversary of the murder of Saudi Arabian journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Turkey has brought charges against six other suspects from Saudi Arabia. The Istanbul prosecutor’s office is demanding life sentences for two of the accused, as the state news agency Anadolu reported yesterday. For the other four, prison sentences of up to five years are required.

According to Turkish media reports, the trial will take place in the absence of the accused, as the suspects are not in Turkey.

In connection with the murder of Khashoggi, a trial against 20 Saudis had already started in Istanbul in July, none of whom are in Turkey either. The Turkish public prosecutor’s office accuses the defendants of having killed Khashoggi “deliberately” and “in agony”.
