The Jordanian authorities accuse the king’s half-brother, Hamsa bin Hussein, and other suspects of undermining the security of the kingdom. According to the security authorities, there have been „contacts with foreign representatives“ aimed at „destabilizing the security of Jordan,“ Deputy Prime Minister Aiman Safadi said today. The former Crown Prince Hamsa says he is under house arrest.
A total of more than a dozen other suspects were arrested, it said. The security services had recommended King Abdullah II to bring everyone involved to the State Security Court, added Safadi. The US newspaper „Washington Post“ had reported that Hamsa had been placed under restrictions in the course of investigations into a plot.
Alleged plot to overthrow the king
The plot is said to have aimed at the overthrow of Abdullah II. The monarch took the throne in 1999 after the death of his father King Hussein. The 41-year-old Hamsa denied being involved in a conspiracy in a video published by the British BBC.
The prince is said to have recorded the video in his arrest and passed it on to the broadcaster with the help of his lawyer. In it he raises serious allegations against King Abdullah II. He speaks of arrests, intimidation and threats against critics of the king. The “incompetent and corrupt” government wants to silence its opponents by all means.
Prince Hamsa’s mother also intervened in the meantime. The allegations are a „nasty slander,“ she shared on Twitter. Queen Noor pray for the innocent victims. She is a widow of the former King Hussein.
