Japan and the USA reaffirmed their security alliance following the change of government in Tokyo. At a meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Tokyo yesterday, Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said Japan hopes to further strengthen bilateral relations under the newly elected new Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga.

At their first meeting, both ministers also spoke out in favor of a free and open Indo-Pacific. That is the „basis for peace and stability“ in the region, said Pompeo. The US Secretary of State added that the cornerstone of this is the relationship between Japan and the United States, which has ensured security and prosperity for decades.

The discussion took place in the run-up to a meeting of the foreign ministers of Japan, the USA, Australia and India in Tokyo. At the meeting, the ministers wanted to discuss a further deepening of their joint cooperation with the aim of ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific region in the future. The background to this is the concern of the four partner states about China’s growing drive for power in the region.
