The infamous American gangster boss James „Whitey“ Bulger is dead. He was 89 years old. The notorious felon was found lifeless in his cell in a West Virginia jail, the relevant prison authorities said yesterday.Attempts to revive him have failed. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that investigations into the cause of death had been initiated. Media reports that Bulger was killed were not confirmed by the authorities. According to the „Boston Globe“ is a fellow inmate „with links to the mafia“ as a suspect.

Born in 1929, Bulger has long been considered one of the most wanted criminals in the United States. Among other things, he is said to have been involved in murders, extortion, drug trafficking, criminal conspiracies and money laundering, especially in the East Coast metropolis of Boston.

Bulger had been sent to the Hazelton Maximum Security Detention Center on Monday to serve the rest of his sentence. The mob boss was sentenced to twice in life in 2013 for murdering 11 people and extortion, money laundering and drug trafficking.

The former leader of the Boston Winter Hill gang was arrested in June 2011 after 16 years fleeing to California, where he lived under a false name with his longtime girlfriend.

Bulger’s life has been the subject of numerous films and TV series, including „Departed – Under enemies“ (2006) by star director Martin Scorsese, „Black Mass“ (2015) with Johnny Depp and the series „Brotherhood“ (2006-2008).
