Against the backdrop of new tensions with Iran, Israel launched a spy satellite into space. The Ofek 16 satellite was placed in orbit during the night, the Israeli Ministry of Defense said today. The data transmission had started according to plan. However, several tests are planned before full use can begin.
The electro-optical satellite was developed by the Ministry of Defense and the Israeli Space Industry (IAI). He was launched from a location in central Israel by a Shavit missile, the release said.
„Essential for Israel’s Security“
Defense Minister Benni Ganz spoke of „another extraordinary achievement for the defense apparatus“. He said: „Technological superiority and intelligence capabilities are essential for the security of the State of Israel.“ Like various previous models, the spy satellite is said to contribute to improved military intelligence.
Amos Yadlin, former head of Israeli military intelligence, wrote on Twitter that the use of Ofek 16 gave Israel „special strategic and intelligence capabilities“. This is especially important „in those days when a possible escalation with Iran is emerging“.
