Irrespective of US sanctions, Iran intends to stick to the nuclear agreement for the time being but expects „positive signals“. Otherwise, Tehran will continue to say goodbye to some of the commitments, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said.

He told the Russian agency Interfax today at a security conference in the Central Asian ex-Soviet republic of Tajikistan. Ruhani also expressed the hope that other countries would support peace efforts in the region.

Reproach of destabilization

At the same time, the Iranian president once again criticized the US withdrawal from the agreement and the „illegal sanctions“ against his country. „This policy is a violation of the right to self-determination, which in turn is a fundamental and inviolable right of all nations,“ Ruhani said. The day before, he had accused the US of destabilizing the situation in the Middle East in the former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan.

Iran concluded the Vienna Atomic Energy Agreement in 2015 with the five UN veto powers – USA, Russia, China, France and Great Britain – as well as Germany. It is intended to prevent Iran from building a nuclear bomb. In return for restricting and monitoring Iran’s nuclear activities, punitive measures imposed on Iran should be withdrawn.
