In the investigation against the Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro as a result of allegations of attempted political interference, incriminating material has emerged.
A video session of a cabinet meeting last month said Bolsonaro said he needed to change the head of the Rio de Janeiro federal police to protect family members who were being investigated, a person familiar with the Reuters news agency video said yesterday. The recording was presented to investigators who dealt with the allegations of former Justice Minister Sergio Moro.
Moro resigned two days after the said cabinet meeting in April and accused Bolsonaro of interfering in law enforcement for personal reasons. Moro’s lawyers said the video „fully substantiated“ the allegations against the president.
Bolsonaro was unimpressed
Bolsonaro stressed that he was not concerned about the Supreme Court’s investigation and said that the federal police had never investigated his family. He said the word „federal police“ was not heard on the record in question, but he believed the video should have been destroyed.
After transcribing the video and interviewing the ministers involved, the Attorney General will decide whether to act against Bolsonaro for abuse of power and obstruction of the judiciary. Should the Supreme Court and two-thirds of the House of Commons see substantiated evidence of guilt, the President would be removed from office and the Supreme Court would be sued.
