After days of mass protests in India against a new naturalization law, the country’s highest court now wants to deal with it. In January, dozens of critics are to be heard who question the constitutionality of the law passed last week.

The new law is intended to facilitate naturalization for migrants from the three predominantly Muslim neighboring countries Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan – but only if they are not Muslims.

Muslim groups, opposition parties and student organizations criticize that the law would for the first time link citizenship and religion, which is contrary to the Indian constitution. The law would also discriminate against Muslims. The highest court asked the Indian government to comment on the allegations.
