India and China have agreed to withdraw their troops from the highly contested area in the Himalayas at their border a week after the incident.
Military representatives on both sides agreed on this in a „positive and constructive“ conversation, said today from circles of the Indian government. „The modalities for a withdrawal from all controversial areas in the east of the Ladakh region were discussed and promoted by both sides.“ The consultations would have taken several hours.
According to Indian reports, a brawl between soldiers from both states occurred on Monday last week, in which at least 20 Indian and Chinese soldiers are said to have died. China did not disclose its own victims. The two countries blamed each other for the incident in the western Himalayas and accused each other of provocation.
China and India had fought a brief border war in 1962. They have not resolved the dispute over the border in the Himalayas since then. Gunshots have not been fired in recent years, but there have always been violent attacks.
