In the train accident on the bridge over the Great Belt in Denmark, two more people were killed than originally stated.
Thus, the death toll rises to eight, as a police spokesman said Thursday morning in Odense. Among them were five women and three men, but no children.
It is the worst train accident in Denmark in more than three decades. The responsible investigators are still busy with the processing of the incident.
Both the passenger train crashed on the Storbælt Bridge and the freight train involved in the accident were to be taken to a closed area near Nyborg at the western end of the bridge for further investigation, police said in the Funen region (Fyn). At the same time, the identification of the dead is being worked on.
On Wednesday morning, a train with 131 passengers and three crew members on board the Storebæltbrücke had an accident. So far it is assumed that an empty truck trailer fell off the oncoming freight train and thus triggered the momentous disaster. More about the cause is so far unclear. A review of the cause of the accident is likely to take weeks, possibly months.
At the time of the accident it had stormed heavily in parts of Scandinavia. The bridge connects the Danish islands Funen and Zealand making it one of the most important transport routes in Denmark. Zealand also has the Danish capital of Copenhagen.
Meanwhile, 40 motorists have to pay fines for using their mobile phones to take pictures of the accident on the bridge over the Great Belt. „That’s not alright. Now show respect for those affected – and by the way follow the road traffic regulations !!! », the police of Funen wrote on Twitter.
