France bans beating for children. The parliament in Paris voted by a large majority to change the law, according to the newspaper Le Monde. Physical and mental violence against children is now expressly prohibited.

A penalty, however, is not threatened. Parliament also called on the government to promote parenting education and awareness programs.

The Council of Europe recently accused France of not adequately protecting children from violence by their parents. In most countries of the Council of Europe it is now prohibited to beat children in Germany since the year 2000.
