The Chinese Embassy in Belgium commented to media reports that some 250 Chinese spies are currently working in Brussels.
„These statements are completely unfounded and are pure fiction,“ – stated on the website of the diplomatic mission.
The embassy noted that such irresponsible accusations cast a shadow on China and mislead the public. It is clarified that these statements are „attempts to undermine the Sino-Belgian relations and relations with Europe.“
Earlier, Welt said, citing EU diplomats, that the internal security structures of the European External Relations Service (EASM) warned European diplomats and military workers in Brussels that “about 250 Chinese and 200 Russian spies” could work in the Belgian capital.
In October 2018, Belgium extradited an official from the Department of Homeland Security of the People’s Republic of China suspected of economic espionage to the United States, after which he was detained by American law enforcement agencies.
