The US House of Representatives today began its deliberations on initiating impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump. The first step today was the rules for the debate about the planned impeachment because of the storming of the Capitol by militant Trump supporters. The vote on the charge of „inciting riot“ was scheduled for 9 p.m. (CET).
A majority for an impeachment was considered certain: the Democrats of the future President Joe Biden have the necessary simple majority to initiate impeachment proceedings. In addition, several MPs from Trump’s Republicans are also likely to vote for the impeachment.
One week after the US Capitol was stormed, the security measures in the parliament building have been massively strengthened. Thousands of National Guard soldiers were recently deployed around the headquarters of the US Congress. Usually the Capitol’s own police force is active almost exclusively there. On recordings from the building, National Guardsmen could also be seen lying on the floor in corridors and halls of Parliament, resting.
Until the inauguration of the new US President Joe Biden on Wednesday at the Capitol, up to 15,000 National Guard soldiers are to be deployed to support the rest of the security forces. According to media reports, the Federal Police FBI warned that there could be new violent protests around the swearing-in of the Democrat.
NYC Announces Ending Business Relationship With Trump
Because of the storm on the Capitol, the city of New York has now ended business relations with Trump. „The contracts make it very clear that we have the right to terminate the contract if a company, the management of a company, is involved in criminal activities,“ said Mayor Bill de Blasio the TV channel MSNBC. „Inciting an insurrection against the United States government is clearly a criminal activity.“
Trump’s corporate empire consists of a network of hundreds of businesses. It also has contracts with the City of New York to operate a carousel, two ice rinks and a golf course. According to de Blasio, the attractions bring in Trump’s company $ 17 million annually.
