Hundreds of migrants move from Honduras to the USA

Hundreds of people set out from Honduras on foot for the USA. Since the outbreak of the CoV pandemic, it is the first large group of people fleeing violence and poverty in search of a better life in the USA. Guatemala, which lies between Honduras and Mexico, reopened its borders about two weeks ago after a pandemic-related closure in March.

Local media reported that more than 1,000 people left the Honduran city of San Pedro Sula for the border with Guatemala. Many of them crossed these today.
Mexico does not want to allow entry

The migrants faced major hurdles. The US Embassy in Honduras wrote on Twitter that it was harder than ever to enter the US illegally. Mexico’s interior ministry emphasized that it would not allow people to enter the country without the necessary papers.

In addition, on the basis of agreements with Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, the USA can send migrants back there if they enter these countries on their way north but have not applied for asylum there.

Between the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, several “caravans” had reached the US southern border. US President Donald Trump used the topic ahead of the 2018 congressional elections to mobilize his supporters. The US presidential election is scheduled for November 3rd.
