According to the organizers, around one million people took part in the mass demonstration against the controversial extradition law in Hong Kong. The number was announced tonight, as the protests continued. Participation is thus greater than in the mass protest on July 1, 2003, which brought down the controversial national security law.
The proposed law would allow the authorities of China’s Special Administrative Region, which has 7 million inhabitants, to extradite suspects to the People’s Republic at the request of Chinese authorities. Critics argue that the justice system in China is not independent, does not conform to international standards, and is politically dissident.
