The Democratic Camp has achieved a clear majority in the District Council in the Hong Kong elections. The pro-democracy candidates have secured a clear majority of almost 90 percent with 390 out of 452 seats, as the local media company RTHK reports.
Hong Kong Prime Minister Carrie Lam said in a first statement that the government will respect the results of the election and that it will „listen openly to the views of the people.“ She hopes that peace, security and order will remain.
„Free Hong Kong – Revolution Now“
When the first results were announced after midnight, cheers broke out in some polling stations: chants of „Liberating Hong Kong – Revolution Now“ were heard – a slogan of many demonstrators on the streets in the past half year during the increasingly violent protests in the Special Administrative Region.
„This is the power of democracy. This is a democratic tsunami, „said Tommy Cheung, a former student protest leader who won a seat in the Yuen Long district near the Chinese border.
The district council manages a portion of the public funds and is responsible, among other things, for recycling, transport and health care. After months of mass protests against the government, the election went smoothly.
