No country in the world has recorded more refugees than Lebanon in terms of population. Their situation is precarious – and is now even worse by heavy winter weather.
A furious five-day storm put tents under water, and in total, according to the United Nations 151 places were affected, in which about 11,000 refugees from Syria live.
In terms of population, Lebanon has received more refugees than any other country in the world. According to UN estimates, between 1.2 and 1.3 million refugees from Syria are in Lebanon. In addition, Palestinians and Iraqis have found refuge there. More than two-thirds of the refugees from Syria live in poverty, and Lebanon itself is struggling with a serious economic crisis.
Also affected refugee camps in Syria
The situation in the refugee camps is also precarious in the civil war country Syria: Several refugee camps were flooded in the province of Al-Hasakah in the northeast of the country. Even in the contested Idlib province in northwestern Syria, the refugees are exposed to severe weather and cold weather. The child rights organization „Save the Children“ fears for the health of more than 11,000 children in the refugee camps of Idlib.
