Climate activist Greta Thunberg is making slower progress on the Atlantic on her way to the world climate conference in Madrid than on her trip to the US. „We had to slow down the boat to avoid some pretty harsh weather conditions, but now we’re back at full speed,“ the young Swede wrote on Twitter last night.

She hopes to arrive at the beginning of December in the Portuguese capital Lisbon. From there to Madrid, there are just under 600 kilometers. If Thunberg takes the train for this, it should take another ten hours.

The 16-year-old Thunberg travels back to Europe on a catamaran. The reason for this is that Chile’s UN Climate Change Conference, starting on 2 December, was relocated to Madrid because of the protests there.

Time is running out

Thunberg wants to attend the conference and a big climate protest in the Spanish capital on December 6th. Whether the time is enough is unclear. Their environment meant that everything depended on wind and weather. If she can do it, you probably can not say until the end of next week.

More than a week after the departure on the US East Coast, the „Vagabonde“ has made nearly a third of the route to Europe. This is the result of the live tracking of the catamaran. Today, the ship sailed with just under nine knots to the east. On the way there, the North German sailing professional Boris Herrmann and his skipper colleague Pierre Casiraghi had managed to bring Thunberg across the ocean in just 14 days with a high seas yacht.
