Numerous government supporters have taken to the streets in Brazil and have called for the armed forces to intervene again. The protests yesterday in the capital city of Brasilia were against the Congress and the Supreme Court.

„We have the armed forces on the side of the people, for law, order, democracy and freedom,“ said ultra-right President Jair Bolsonaro to his supporters in a statement he broadcast live on social networks. It was enough with the interference. The ex-military alluded to recent rulings by the highest court for which he had recently suffered a number of defeats.

Supreme courts stopped filling posts

On Saturday, former Justice Minister Sergio Moro testified against Bolsonaro to the federal police in Curitiba for eight hours, and according to media reports, presented incriminating evidence. The Supreme Court opened a lawsuit against Bolsonaro over the allegations made by Moro when he resigned. He accused Bolsonaro of wanting to exert political influence on the federal police – which was about to incriminate two of his sons.

Bolsonaro had fired the chief of police, one of Moro’s confidants. However, the supreme court stopped his preferred candidate, a friend of the family. „The constitution will be fulfilled at all costs,“ said Bolsonaro. “Tomorrow we will appoint a new director of the federal police. Brazil will follow its course. “
