The government of the West African crisis country Mali under Prime Minister Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga has resigned. President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has accepted the resignation petition submitted yesterday by the head of government and his cabinet, the presidential office said during the night on Twitter.

A successor to Maiga and a new government would be appointed shortly – „after consultation with all political forces of the majority and the opposition“. Reasons for the departure of the government were not mentioned.

Security situation worsened

Keita, who has been in office since 2013, won the presidential election overshadowed by opposition fraud in August. However, the security situation in the West African state deteriorated during his term in office. In addition to civilians, armed groups repeatedly attack domestic and international armed forces.

Since 2013, there is a UN peacekeeping mission in Mali, it is considered the most dangerous blue helmet mission worldwide. Especially in the north of Mali radical Islamists attack the blue helmets again and again, while in the center of the country violent ethnic conflicts come to a head.
