Ex-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is sending contradicting signals in the Italian government crisis. Although he has thrown the Italian government into a crisis by leaving his small party Italia Viva, Renzi does not want to turn his back entirely on Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

He was ready to discuss reforms and concrete projects for Italy with Conte, said Renzi in the political show „Non e l’Arena“ on the La 7 channel last night.

“It would be in Italy’s interest if all party leaders drafted a reform project for the country. We have to develop new rules for politics, ”said Renzi before the confidence debate in the Chamber of Deputies, in which the future of the Conte government will be decided today. He indicated that he would support a possible unity government with broad support from all parties.

Conte is undergoing a vote of confidence in the Chamber of Deputies today. Tomorrow there will be a vote in the Senate, where the non-party prime minister no longer has a majority after breaking with the Renzi party. Conte had held political talks at the weekend in the hope that a few MPs would form a group of new supporters of his government. They are supposed to replace the lost MPs of the small party Italia Viva.
