German cinema industry: Worst figures in decades

As few tickets as for decades – the number of cinemagoers in Germany fell dramatically last year. 105.4 million moviegoers were counted in 2018. This sold 13.9 percent fewer tickets than in the previous year. In 2017, 122.3 million people had already paid for a movie in the cinema.

Shortly before the beginning of the 69th International Film Festival this Thursday in Berlin, the industry recorded the worst figures since 1992. At that time 105.9 million tickets had been sold at the box office, as the Filmförderungsanstalt announced with the annual statistics.

The German Minister of Culture Monika Grütters (CDU) referred before the publication of the exact numbers on causes of the expected slump: „This is a snapshot, the reasons are well known: there was a football World Cup and a hot long summer. The cinemas notice immediately, „Grütters had told the dpa. Added to this is competition from streaming services.
