Four political activists in Hong Kong have been arrested under the controversial new Hong Kong law. A Hong Kong police officer said yesterday that the three men and a woman, aged between 16 and 21, were suspected of campaigning to secede from the Special Administrative Region of China. Computers, cell phones and documents of those arrested were confiscated.

According to the police, all four are pupils and students. They had called on online networks to found an organization that should work for Hong Kong’s independence. Arrests based on the new security law had previously occurred, including during demonstrations.

The law, which came into effect four weeks ago from Beijing, undermines civil rights in the financial metropolis. China’s leadership reacted to the months-long and sometimes violent mass protests of the democracy movement last year.
