The number of coronavirus deaths recorded within 24 hours in the USA has exceeded the threshold of 3,000 for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Yesterday, the authorities reported 3,157 dead with a confirmed coronavirus infection, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU) in Baltimore today. The highest figure to date with 2,607 deaths was recorded on April 15.
For the second time since the beginning of the pandemic, the number of new infections reported within one day exceeded the 200,000 mark. According to the JHU, the highest value to date was registered on Friday with around 205,000 new cases. Experts had anticipated a nationwide increase in infections with a view to the Thanksgiving holiday last week. The CDC health authority had strongly advised against family visits and travel in advance. However, many people did not adhere to it.
Almost 14 million infections so far
In total, more than 13.9 million people have been infected with the corona virus in the country with around 330 million inhabitants. Since the pandemic began, more than 273,000 people have died from the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen. In absolute terms, that’s more than in any other country in the world.
The Johns Hopkins website is updated regularly and therefore shows a higher level than the official figures from the World Health Organization (WHO). In some cases, numbers – including those of new infections within 24 hours – were subsequently corrected.
Biden warns
The elected US President Joe Biden warned of the dramatic increase in the number of deaths and called for protective measures. „I don’t want to scare anyone, but understand the facts: we will probably lose another 250,000 people between now and January,“ said Biden today (local time) at an online event.
