Tomorrow and Monday, EU leaders will meet for the first time with their colleagues from the countries of the Arab League for a summit. The talks in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, in which Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) also participates, focus on economic relations and migration.
The summit, which was adopted last fall during the informal EU summit under the Austrian EU Presidency in Salzburg, is not a good sign. A meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels at the beginning of the month caused a scandal. One could not agree on a joint statement because Hungary was skeptical about wording on migration.
Above all, the North African states, which are part of the League of Arab States (LAS), are important partners for the EU in migration and asylum policy. Briefly, according to their own statements, bilateral meetings are planned with the heads of state and government from Iraq, Lebanon, Kuwait and Egypt.
