Two weeks ago, the authorities reported the first cholera death following the devastating hurricane in Mozambique. National Health Director Isse announced that the number of illnesses in Beira had risen to 517. In the city of 500,000 inhabitants, the „Idai“ cyclone severely damaged the drinking and wastewater systems.

The number of deaths in Mozambique caused by the cyclone and its consequences increased to a total of 518.

The diarrheal disease cholera is one of the biggest concerns after the hurricane swept through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe in mid-March. It is transmitted by contaminated food and contaminated water.

China sends doctors and emergency workers

The Chinese government sent doctors and emergency workers to help fight the cholera in Beira. Chinese forces sprayed disinfectants in parts of the port city to curb the spread of the disease. The World Health Organization (WTO) has announced 90,000 doses of cholera vaccine that should arrive in the region on Monday.

Cyclone „Idai“ had devastated large parts of Mozambique, Malawi and Simbawe in mid-March and flooded large areas of the country with heavy rain, especially in Mozambique.
