
A police officer was shot today in front of the government building in the Croatian capital Zagreb. The alleged perpetrator, who shot the officer with an assault rifle, was found dead after escaping. According to the police, he committed suicide, as reported by Croatian media. The background to the fact is unclear.
According to eyewitnesses, around 8 a.m., the perpetrator walked to central St. Mark’s Square, where the seat of government and parliament are located. There he opened fire with a Kalashnikov on the entrance of the government building, where a police officer is always standing.
The perpetrator also shot in the direction of parliament and then fled. About an hour later, the police announced that a man who matched the description of the perpetrator had been found dead in a district about two kilometers away.
The 31-year-old officer, who was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his arm and body, is reportedly in stable condition.
