In the presidential election in Argentina, the center-left candidate Alberto Fernandez has already won in the first round, according to partial results. The Peronist came at the polls by counting 75 percent of the vote to about 47 percent. The economic liberal incumbent Mauricio Macri received only 41 percent and was thus voted out.

For the victory in the first round was necessary, more than 45 percent of the votes or at least 40 percent of the votes and a distance of ten percentage points to the runner-up. The former is the case according to the partial result.

Macri has already acknowledged his defeat. Before supporters in Buenos Aires, he said he had congratulated his challenger Fernandez on the election victory. He will meet him today to prepare for an orderly handover. At the same time, Macri announced a constructive opposition policy.

Fernandez will assume the presidency in the troubled South American country on 10 December. He competed with the controversial ex-president Cristina Kirchner, who applied for the post of vice-president.

Fernandez had already beaten Macri clearly in a primary. This triggered fears in the financial markets: investors fear that he would seek a return to Kirchner’s policy, which had relied on trade and capital controls. The third largest economy in Latin America is in recession.
