Extra charges for payments in euros soon prohibited

For withdrawals and payments in euro, no additional fees may be charged in the future within the EU. This was agreed by negotiators from the European Parliament and the Member States. The institutions still have to formally agree with the move.

So far, customers from euro countries can often choose between the local currency and the euro when traveling to EU countries outside the euro area. Online purchases with card payments outside the euro zone can also often be made between the national currency and the euro.

When paying in the local currency – in Poland, for example, zloty – the bank does not visibly convert the amount to be paid into euros for the customer. Consumers then learn a few days later on their bank statement how many euros they have ultimately paid. These costs should now be made more transparent.

However, if you select the payment directly in euros, the payment service provider calculates the amount immediately visibly – but he charges additional fees. According to the EU decision, these charges should now be dropped.
