After his removal by parliament, the ex-president of Peru, Martin Vizcarra, will not be allowed to leave the country for the next 18 months. A court yesterday imposed a travel ban at the request of the public prosecutor’s office investigating Vizcarra for corruption. Parliament had deposed the 57-year-old on Monday after two and a half years in office because of the corruption allegations. Vizcarra denies the allegations.

Thousands of people took to the streets in several cities in Peru on Thursday to protest Vizcarra’s disempowerment. There were clashes between police officers and protesters. 14 people were injured, two of them seriously.

Parliamentary President Manuel Merino has taken over the highest office on a temporary basis. He is already the third president of the Andean state since 2016. The next presidential and parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place in April next year.
