EU extends entry ban to Japan

The list of countries from which people can easily enter the EU is getting shorter and shorter. Due to the significantly increased number of coronavirus infections, there should no longer be an exception to the entry restrictions introduced at the beginning of the pandemic in Japan.

The EU ambassadors of the 27 member states agreed on this yesterday in Brussels, as dpa learned from diplomatic circles. The decision has yet to be officially confirmed by the capitals in writing.
Not legally binding

This leaves only six countries worldwide from which citizens are normally allowed to enter the EU: Australia, New Zealand, Rwanda, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand. All other countries have drastic restrictions.

All EU countries except Ireland and the non-EU countries Switzerland, Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland had already agreed on this at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in March. All trips to the EU that are not absolutely necessary are initially prohibited.

However, the entry stop is not legally binding. There are also exceptions, for example, for EU citizens and their families. At the beginning of July, the entry ban was relaxed for some countries for the first time.
