For the first time since the beginning of the Ethiopian military offensive in the breakaway region of Tigray, a UN aid convoy has reached the area. With 18 trucks 570 tons of food were delivered, as UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric announced in New York. The food is said to be distributed in the coming days in the Adi Harush and Mai Ayni camps, where refugees from Eritrea live.

The current delivery enables 35,000 people to be fed for a month, the UN spokesman said. More UN convoys are on their way to other camps. Access to Tigray for humanitarian aid deliveries had been blocked by the Ethiopian government in recent weeks. The United Nations continued to seek „unhindered and complete“ access for its aid, Dujarric said.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) successfully delivered the first aid to Tigray on Saturday. This convoy was said to consist of seven trucks. They brought medicines and medical equipment to the regional capital of Mekele to treat more than 400 people.
