As of June 1, Estonia will open its borders to citizens of EU countries, countries in the Schengen area, Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The government of Tallinn has decided that there is no quarantine requirement for travelers from countries with a low coronavirus infection rate. Prime Minister Jüri Ratas said on Facebook yesterday.

The limit was 15 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past 14 days. Anyone traveling from European countries with a higher infection rate to the Baltic state must continue to live in isolation for two weeks. According to Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, citizens from 16 Schengen countries could currently come to Estonia without quarantine – including Austria. The list of countries is checked once a week, he told Estonian radio.

In the fight against the coronavirus, Estonia had closed its borders in mid-March and imposed a stop on entry for foreigners without residence in the country. The ban had recently been relaxed for citizens of the neighboring countries of Latvia, Lithuania and Finland.

In international comparison, Estonia is doing well in the coronavirus crisis. The Tallinn government reacted early to the spread of the coronavirus with stringent measures. The Baltic Sea state with 1.3 million inhabitants has recorded 1,851 confirmed infections and 66 deaths related to the virus.
