Russia and Turkey are demanding more efforts from the conflicting parties in Libya, a country with a civil war, to end the fighting. You have to take “real steps” towards a sustainable ceasefire, the Kremlin announced today in Moscow after President Vladimir Putin spoke to his Turkish colleague Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the phone.
In addition, direct negotiations should be started, as agreed at the Libya summit in Berlin at the beginning of the year.
The Turkish Ministry of Communications announced that the two heads of state had emphasized the importance of close cooperation and dialogue during the conversation. Erdogan and Putin have also agreed to improve relations in terms of tourism and the joint fight against the corona virus.
Civil war has raged in Libya since the overthrow of long-term ruler Muammar al-Gaddafi in 2011. Prime Minister Fajis al-Sarradsch is fighting with the powerful General Khalifa Haftar for supremacy in the oil-rich country. Sarradsch ’government troops are mainly supported by Turkey and Qatar, Haftar by Russia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Egypt.
