The key interest rate in the euro area will remain at the record low of 0.0 percent at least until the end of the first half of 2020. This was decided by the Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) at its external meeting today in Vilnius, Lithuania, as the central bank in Frankfurt announced.

It has been at this record low since March 2016. The depositors have also kept the deposit rate at the previous level of minus 0.4 percent. Banks must continue to pay fines if they park excess money with the central bank.
