The Italian Andrea Enria has been racing for the vacant post of supreme banking supervisor in the euro area, as the European Central Bank (ECB) announced today. Enria has been the head of the EU Banking Authority (EBA) for many years. He prevailed against the vice-chairman of the Irish Central Bank, Sharon Donnery.

The ECB has informed the Chairman of the Economic and Monetary Committee, Roberto Gualtieri, as well as the Council President, Austrian Finance Minister Hartwig Löger (ÖVP), of the ECB Governing Council’s decision, the central bank said in a statement on the ECB’s website.
Now the EU Parliament is on the ballot, which has a say in the selection. It must approve the appointment proposal of the ECB after a hearing before European governments finally give the go-ahead. The current incumbent, the French Daniele Nouy, retires at the end of December after five years. Enria is to follow her on 1 January 2019.
