The airport in the northern Iraqi city of Erbil has been attacked with an armed drone. The aim of the drone equipped with explosives was the military part of the airport used by the US-led coalition against the Islamic State (IS), the Interior Ministry of the autonomous Kurdish region in northern Iraq announced yesterday. Nobody was injured in the explosion. However, one building was damaged.
Almost at the same time, according to Ankara, a Turkish soldier was killed by rocket fire at a military base in Bashika about 50 kilometers away. It is unclear whether there is a connection between the attacks.
Nobody has yet confessed to the drone attack on the airport. However, the pro-Iranian militia Aulijaa al-Dam, which had already claimed a similar attack on the airport in February, welcomed the attack on the Telegram messenger service. In mid-February, the military part of the airport was attacked with more than a dozen missiles. An Iraqi civilian and a foreign employee of the US-led troops died.
